Fastener standard equivalents: DIN ↔ ISO ↔ GB ↔ GOST
The same bolt has a different name in every standards system. This is the mapping our own engineering team uses when a German drawing has to be quoted in China and delivered to Russia — DIN and ISO on one side, GB (Chinese national) and GOST (Russian / EAEU) on the other.
Read this before you substitute.
The pairs below are the widely documented counterparts, not dimensional identities. Head geometry, across-flats key size and tolerances do differ between systems, and a technical inspector is entitled to reject an unagreed substitution. Treat this table as the basis of a written offer, never as a blank cheque to swap a part.

How to read the table
- DIN numbers describe one product: 933 is specifically the fully threaded hexagon head bolt, 931 the partially threaded one. The GOST system folds both into a single accuracy-class number.
- GB numbers are the Chinese national standards; older drawings and factories still use the pre-2010 GB numbers without the "T", so GB 5783 and GB/T 5783 are the same document.
- ISO numbers are the neutral international series. Where a DIN and an ISO number both exist, the ISO version is the one written into European public procurement.
- GOST numbers carry a year of issue (7798-70). EAEU conformity documents are issued against the current edition, so state the year on your specification.
Frequently asked
Is a DIN 933 bolt the same as a GOST 7798-70 bolt?
They are the closest counterparts across the two systems and are routinely substituted in commercial work, but they are not dimensionally identical: the Russian GOST head is generally slightly wider across the flats than the DIN head, so European sockets can fit loosely. In commercial construction substitution is normal if the project does not name a single standard; on government contracts and supervised projects it must be agreed in writing before delivery.
Is DIN 933 the same as ISO 4017 and GB/T 5783?
Yes in the essentials. DIN 933 (hexagon head bolt, full thread), ISO 4017 and GB/T 5783 describe the same product: hexagon head, metric coarse thread running the full length of the shank, with matching head dimensions for the common sizes. Minor differences exist in edge chamfers and in the largest sizes, so check the head dimensions for anything above M24.
Do strength grades carry across standards?
Yes. Grade 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 mean the same thing under DIN, ISO, GB and GOST: the first figure times 100 is the minimum tensile strength in MPa (8.8 = 800 MPa) and the second figure is the ratio of yield to tensile strength (8.8 = 0.8, so 640 MPa yield). Substitution across systems works at the same grade provided the steel chemistry is comparable — which is what an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate proves.
Why does DIN 933 map to two GOST numbers?
Because the GOST system splits by accuracy class rather than by thread length. GOST 7798-70 covers normal-accuracy hexagon head bolts and GOST 7805-70 covers increased accuracy; both exist with full and partial thread. This is why a Russian specification usually names GOST 7798-70 or 7805-70 where a German drawing would distinguish DIN 933 (full thread) from DIN 931 (partial thread).
Can I substitute an equivalent standard without telling the buyer?
No, and it is the most common cause of a rejected delivery. Head geometry, across-flats dimensions and tolerances do differ between DIN, ISO, GB and GOST even where the thread and grade match. Always offer the substitution in writing before shipping and record the buyer’s written acceptance on the order.
Which standards does SFX Fasteners supply?
We stock DIN, ISO, GB and JIS/ANSI series fasteners, and we can produce to GOST dimensions on request. Every line can be shipped with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate, a full technical specification, and a packing list with weights. Ask us if you need the equivalence of a part number that is not listed here.
Need the part number quoted?
Send us the standard, size and grade — or just the drawing — and we will come back with the equivalent part, the unit price in USD, and the delivery time. No minimum order, so a sample quantity is fine.
